Leif was in good spirits and joking as they wheeled him away for surgery preparations around 10 o'clock this morning. Many friends stopped by the waiting area to visit with the family throughout the day; some of whom were able to be there when Dr. Helmsworth came in shortly after 5 o'clock to discuss how the procedure went...

Leif came through surgery well, although they had to put chest tubes in both sides... and some of the lymph nodes in the affected area did come back positive for malignancy... they won't know until Wednesday afternoon what stage of cancer it is...

The family was able to visit with him briefly in ICU a few hours after surgery. He was sitting up in bed, groggy but still sharp as ever. Even semi-sedated and just shortly out of major surgery, Leif was still giving the nurses a hard time. It is Unity Hospital policy to ask a patient for their name and birthdate prior to administering any medication. And upon being asked for his information he replied, "I'm Fred". Always a character...
