Leif underwent emergency surgery at 12:30 today. He was leaking from where his esophagus and stomach were reconnected. The blue dye he was given by his NG tube yesterday made it's way through his chest tube today. The leakage also caused an infection in his chest.
The medical staff did surgery to remove the infection and repair the leak. In addition they: inserted a feeding tube directly into Leif's small intestine and inserted a drainage tube directly into his stomach to rest his stomach/esophagus area for at least 2 months.
They also removed the chest tube in his right side and replaced it with a new one in a different location on his right side, the NG tube was removed and they also replaced his ventillator tube.
He remains sedated in ICU. It is hopeful he will be removed from the ventillator sometime late next week.
