Leif had a communion service with family, Bishop Phil Hougen, Pastor Don Sondrol and Chaplains Cindy Breed, Martha Lang and Vicki Pedersen in his room this afternoon before he was taken off of the ventillator. He is breathing on his own and being assisted by an oxygen mask. Initially he was doing alright, but after about an hour he began to struggle with maintaining his oxygen level. He is being supported with medications to keep him comfortable without compromising his breathing.
He was moved out of intensive care and into a palliative care (hospice) room. He is getting round-the-clock care. And family is able to stay with him at all times. Leif is terminally ill. He is working very hard to breathe and receiving medication as needed to keep him as comfortable as possible on his journey.

Leif:
I can't weave words together like you can. In spite of this short coming I must write to express my feelings.
There are two things I want to touch on. One is your personality. The other is your faith.
First, I want to say I know few persons who are of the kind and moral fiber that makes up your being. Whether serving as my pastor or sharing conversation and laughs over lunch, I am always amazed that you find a positive spin concerning any person or any situation. I am far less compassionate. Perhaps the type of person you are can be described by Ralph Waldo Emerson when he writes, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are of tiny matters compared to what lies with in us."
Secondly, I admire your faith. Ten years ago when I woke up in the ICU at Unity Hospital one of the first things I saw was tears streaming down your face. I knew I was in trouble. During my subsequent recovery I wasted much time asking the question: Why me? You were the person who insisted I ask: What next? That you maintained was the important question. To describe that kind of faith, I turn to the words of Martin Luther, "Faith is a living, daring confidence in God's grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times."
I am a better person for having you among my friends. This is something I will cherish forever.
